FOLDED PLASTIC — A COLLECTION TO BE ADOPTED, NOT BOUGHT
Stockholm-based design studio MANU makes its Swedish debut with Folded Plastic — a collection of tactile objects crafted from recycled PET bottles. Guided by a mission to create with less, MANU works exclusively with reused, recycled, and upcycled materials, producing locally in micro-factories to reduce waste, emissions, and overproduction.
The studio’s philosophy is rooted in care: for materials, for process, and for how objects live with us. “Inspired by the Japanese idea that objects have souls, we think of our products as characters — not bought or sold, but adopted,” says MANU.
Each object is produced over a ten-hour period in the studio’s Swedish micro-factory. With a new facility in the US, MANU will soon offer localized production across two continents — allowing the brand to make objects closer to its customers using locally sourced waste materials, scaling one region at a time.
Working across waste streams, the material becomes both the starting point and the guide — its inherent properties shaping the design of each object. The Folded Plastic collection features exaggerated geometric ridges that transform plastic from a lightweight, disposable material into something rich, tactile, and unexpectedly delicate.
