TEMPORARY GUEST

BarroLevén’s art has a spiritual dimension that is firmly rooted in the craft. It is as if their work says: Ecce terra, see the earth. The mystery can be found in the visible. Our lives on this earth are no more than a moment in a cosmic creative process of dizzying periods of time. Man is a temporary guest in a world that preceded us and lives on after us.

In their installations, the duo often play with the spectator’s perception and set the scale of the human body against the incomprehensible dimensions of space. In BarroLevén’s most recent work sadness is also present – a silvery blackness reminding us of the world’s beauty and its vulnerability.

Many of BarroLevén’s works are in a strange way surface and depth at the same time. For some time they have been experimenting with foamglass a material that has been developed as a material for the construction industry. Foamglass is made from recycled glass which would otherwise be thrown away. The fragments of glass are ground to powder and a leavening agent is added. When heated, the material ferments to produce a cake that is reminiscent of lava.

Galleri Glas was founded in 2017 with the aim of promoting contemporary glass art and reenergizing an art form that has played such an important part in Sweden’s cultural heritage.
